New Deepfish Mobile Browser from Microsoft
Category: Cellphone News -
Microsoft has developed a new mobile browser, Deepfish, promising a browsing experience more similar to that on a PC. The goal of Deepfish, the Live Labs team said, is “preserving the rich layout and full form of documents on mobile devices while providing novel ways of effectively navigating that content on small screens.”
The Deepfish browsers seems to be Microsoft’s attempt to make up for the lack of functionality of Pocket IE; it’s a program that allows you to see a page from a very zoomed out perspective, and then zoom straight into a the part of the page that you want to see. It’s quite similar to how Safari on the iPhone works.
When you want to zoom-in on a specific section, click the center/joystick key to bring up a small gray focus box, move the box around the page with the directional keys, then click the center key to zoom-in. If you click the center key a third time, you’ll see an arrow cursor so you can click on buttons, links, text fields, etc.
This is a beta/tech preview of Deepfish, so there are some rough edges, but it’s a very cool technology - similar to the mobile Safari browser that Steve Jobs showed off on the iPhone. You can find out more about Deepfish, and sign up to be a tester at labs.live.com/Deepfish/. There’s also another video overview on Microsoft’s Channel 10.
